Burial & grounding

Earth

Recalibration: emotional and physical regulation, grounding and neutralising frequencies.

Let the ground take the whole weight.

Most people who come for an earth burial say the same thing first: they want to fully switch off, to be enveloped by the Earth and feel her holding them.

We start by connecting to our environment. Then we create a space for you to get comfortable, deep enough for you to be covered by nature's weighted blanket.

Once you are lying in the sand, the sand bathing begins. You are slowly enveloped in warm, moist, crystalline particles until just your head and neck are visible. I then lead you through a series of guided meditations so you can fully drop in and be breathed by the Earth.

How a session unfolds

Allow two hours for a one-to-one session. Each one is unique, so we leave time for whatever needs to unfold.

  1. Connecting with the space

We choose a spot that feels good and start to create your space.

  2. Lying down

You lie back and I cover you in layers, checking in as the weight builds. Your head and face stay free.

  3. Sinking and deepening in

We slow the mind with the breath, then move through a series of guided meditations, allowing ample time for inner travel.

  4. Rising & grounding

A slow emergence, then barefoot walking on stone and wet sand to settle what has shifted.

Come to Earth if

  • Your mind won't stop, even when your body is exhausted.
  • You spend a lot of time on screens, in cars or indoors.
  • You fly regularly, or have travelled by plane recently.
  • You find it hard to relax and unwind.

What people often notice

  • A deep sense of calm and stillness.
  • A quieter mind, with fewer looping thoughts.
  • Slower, deeper breathing.
  • Feeling more grounded and regulated.

What the research says

These practices are ancient. The science around them is recent and uneven. Here is what it shows so far, and how much weight each finding can carry.

Promising evidence · Promising, no control group

Reducing what the senses have to process, as floating does, quickly lowered anxiety and lifted mood in people with anxiety.

Feinstein et al., 2018, PLOS ONE

Early evidence · Animal research only

A common soil bacterium, Mycobacterium vaccae, activated serotonin-producing brain cells in mice and changed stress-related behaviour.

Lowry et al., 2007, Neuroscience

Evidence ratings are a plain-language summary of each study's design and size, from early (animal or very small studies) to strong (large reviews of many studies). Follow the links to read the papers yourself.

A practice to try at home

Ten minutes on the ground

A small taste of the earth work you can do today, wherever you are.

Audio guide coming soon. I'm recording this practice in my own voice, outdoors, so you can be guided through it.

  1. Find grass, sand or soil. Take off your shoes.
  2. Lie down on your back and let your arms fall open.
  3. Feel for the places where the ground meets you: heels, calves, shoulder blades, the back of your head.
  4. Each time you breathe out, let one of those places get heavier.
